AÑASCO — Gunmen attempted to rob an armored car outside a bank in western Puerto Rico on Thursday and two bystanders died in the resulting shootout, police said.
Police spokesman Jonathan Matias said in a phone interview that two bank customers were killed in the exchange of gunfire with security guards, one of whom also was wounded and taken to the hospital. His condition was unknown.
Matias said police aren’t yet sure how many gunmen were involved in the robbery in the coastal municipality of Añasco, but believe one was injured. He said the robbers fled in a stolen car, but it’s not clear if they made off with any money.
FBI spokesman Carlos Osorio said the agency is taking over the case, but did not have additional details.
The U.S. territory of 3.4 million people reported 679 killings last year, a 16 percent increase from the previous year.
