SAN JUAN – FEMA on Wednesday changed the leadership team overseeing Puerto Rico recovery efforts after the unprecedented destruction caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria in September.

As a part of the effort, Mike Byrne will assume the role of federal coordinating officer for Puerto Rico, FEMA announced.

Caribbean Area Division Director Alejandro De La Campa will continue to serve as the senior governmental liaison, providing open lines of communication with the Governor of Puerto Rico and the 78 municipal leaders while Byrne will oversee the current operational needs.

“De La Campa will focus on working with the mayors and their long-term recovery needs. De La Campa will work closely with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to maintain the lasting relationships he established as the Caribbean Area Division director,” according to a FEMA statement, which did not elaborate further on the changes.
