Puerto Rico House committee demands insurance claims data
SAN JUAN – The chairwoman of the Puerto Rico House Committee on Consumer Affairs, Banking and Insurance, Rep. Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez, demanded Wednesday of Insurance Commissioner Javier Rivera Ríos, an account of the claims filed on the island following hurricanes Irma and María.
The majority New Progressive Party (NPP) lawmaker asked that her committee be sent a list with every claim closed, detailing whether policyholders were paid, as well as the claims still pending.
“Nine months after the passage of Hurricane Maria and already after a new hurricane season began there are still complaints from insured consumers about the process of claims for the different types of insurance policies,” the representative for Bayamón said in a statement; “thus, we are requesting that the information we asked for be delivered within a term of no more than five working days from today.”
Lebrón Rodríguez also demanded that the commissioner provide the total number of complaints filed with his office, the total number of fines or notifications issued to date and that he “indicate to us the affirmative actions he has taken to expedite the fair and satisfactory payment of insurance claims.”
She said that policyholding businesses and condo residents have faced the most difficulties with the claims process.
