Ashley Furniture to donate 4,700 mattresses to Hurricane Maria victims

By on January 17, 2018

SAN JUAN – Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. is donating more than 4,700 mattresses to victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The announcement Tuesday valued the donation at $1 million and is in partnership with Ashley Furniture HomeStores on the island, owned by the local Empresas Berríos. The Category 4 hurricane hit the island Sept. 20 and was the strongest storm to make landfall in Puerto Rico in 85 years.

Mueblerías Berríos will deliver the donated mattresses to families across the island affected by Maria. Beatriz Isabel Rosselló, first lady of Puerto Rico, is working with the local Housing and Family departments to organize the deliveries. The U.S. Army National Guard will lead a caravan of trucks across the island, through more than 70 towns, to make the deliveries, which are scheduled to begin Wednesday.

“The images from Hurricane Maria were devastating to see. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the victims as they rebuild their communities,” said Todd Wanek, president & CEO of Ashley Furniture Industries. “Ashley is committed to supporting the communities in which we have a presence, and we hope this donation will aid the people of Puerto Rico.”

Noel Berríos, owner & vice president of Mueblerías Berríos, commented: “The residents of this island have supported us from the beginning and have watched us grow as a company. It is now our turn to support them in this difficult time of rebuilding our home–Puerto Rico. Ashley Furniture and Berríos share the same values, and the result of that is this great contribution.”

The Berríos family opened two Ashley HomeStores, in Hatillo and Cupey, in November. Although the Berríos family has 26 stores around the island, this year they plan to open three more HomeStores.

In September, Ashley Furniture made furniture donations, with a retail value of more than $2 million, to relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida. The company said it “has provided hundreds of hours of in-kind services and millions of dollars in furniture and funds to flood, tornado and hurricane victims across the United States and the world.”

The company was recently named one of America’s Best Employers by Forbes in 2017. Ashley Furniture HomeStores has more than 800 locations in 43 countries.
