Bernier: “I have never met Anaudi”
Popular Democratic Party (PDP) president and gubernatorial candidate David Bernier assured Saturday he doesn’t know his party’s convicted former fundraiser, Anaudi Hernández Pérez, and explained the mention of his name on the guest list of the governor’s suite in the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum (known colloquially as Choliseo), is due to the fact that he was always invited to such events as Secretary of State.
“I have never met Anaudi Hernández. […] As Secretary of State, I am invited to every activity. I rarely went to activities because I am busy with my children,” explained Bernier to journalists after participating in a forum with the gubernatorial candidates organized by the College of Social Work Professionals of the University of the Sacred Heart (USC by it Spanish initials).
The PDP president affirmed he is unaffiliated to Hernández Pérez’s trial, which involves several public officials in a corruption scheme.
“I don’t know that man or who he is. They invited candidates, personnel from the party’s district, but the Secretary of State is invited to everything. I rarely went because, evidently, I always use the little spare time that I have for my kids,” said Bernier, who in this occasion was accompanied by his daughter, Miranda.
The gubernatorial candidate was not clear on his response regarding whether or not he attended the suite on May 4, 2013, for a Don Omar concert and the former fundraiser’s birthday celebration.
Bernier, his brother Víctor, his wife, Alexandra Fuentes, and his recently-assigned campaign coordinator, Javier González, appear on the list provided by Fortaleza.
Other names on the various concert guest lists are: Jesús Manuel Ortiz, Fortaleza’s Public Affairs secretary; Luis Castro, General Services Administration director; Héctor Vargas, Hernández Pérez’s business partner; and former PDP electoral commissioner, Eder Ortiz. Also figured are three co-accused in the corruption trial: Sally López, former administrator of the Workforce Development Agency (WDL); Sonia Barreto, formal purchase director of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (Prasa); and Ivonne Falcón, former Prasa Administration and Finance vice president.
During the morning, representative Enrique “Quiquito” Meléndez demanded Bernier state if, in effect, he knew Hernández Pérez after appearing on the list.
“Bernier’s ‘I don’t remember’s’ are not limited to how he voted in the 2012 plebiscite, but now he claims he doesn’t remember if he attended the birthday party for PDP convicted fundraiser Anaudi Hernández in the Choliseo. The great irony is that Fortaleza is the one that is clearing up Bernier’s memory,” he expressed.
