Blood Bank of Puerto Rico puts out urgent request for blood donations
Needs ‘good inventory’ to face any emergency amid the pandemic
SAN JUAN – The executive director of the Puerto Rico Medical Services Administration (ASEM by its Spanish acronym), attorney Jorge Matta González, said Friday that the Blood Bank of Puerto Rico urgently needs blood and platelet donors to address any emergency that may arise.
“At the Blood Bank we must always maintain a good inventory of blood to be ready to face any emergency that may occur especially amid the coronavirus pandemic that affects the country,” Matta González said in a statement.
He is also executive director of the Hospital Universitario de Adultos (Adult University Hospital) (UDH) and explained that blood donation is of vital importance for polytrauma patients with penetrating wounds, as well as for other health conditions that need blood transfusions frequently as part of treatment.
“The Blood Bank of Puerto Rico has implemented additional safety measures to assist donors who come to the Bank. Donating blood and platelets is safe and does not affect the immune system. Those interested in donating blood or platelets, can call (787) 777-3844 or the ASEM switchboard, (787) 777-3535 extension 6550,” he concluded.
