Call for State Insurance Fund Administrator’s Resignation Continues
SAN JUAN – Sen. Ángel “Chayanne” Martínez Santiago demanded Tuesday that State Insurance Fund Corp. (SIF) Administrator Liza Estrada Figueroa resign for allegedly covering up “an avalanche” of discrimination and harassment complaints by employees and doctors against Bayamón’s regional director, Mariel Martínez Ortiz.
Martínez Santiago said there are at least 10 complaints submitted by employees, including doctors, against Martínez Ortiz. The complaints were filed between May 2015 and February 2016 at SIF’s Labor Relations and Employment Equality Office, where the senator says they weren’t addressed.
“For example, we have in our possession a complaint by an employee who alleges Martínez Ortiz relocated her from an office where she was an executive to SIF’s lobby to serve as a ‘hostess,’ welcoming the public, in addition to constant humiliation in front of other employees,” the legislator said, adding that the employee filed her complaint in July and has not yet been investigated.
“We also have complaints by doctors who have had time illegally cut from their salaries for political reasons. In fact, this official is famous for changing the ‘time details’ of employees and marking them absent when the truth is the employee is working,” the politician added.
“There are many more complaints – too many. Due to the investigative unit’s inaction, many employees have decided to submit complaints to the Government Ethics Office and have even sued in federal court. The truth is Administrator Estrada has enabled the Bayamón regional director to continued with her pattern of harassment and discrimination without impunity. That is why we are asking for her resignation,” he concluded.
Martínez Santiago said that in the next few days he will present a motion for the Senate to investigate the matter.
