Carmen Yulin accepts meeting with Trump
San Juan’s mayor, Carmen Yulín Cruz, announced that she has accepted the invitation to participate in a briefing with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, who arrives today in Puerto Rico around midday, more than two weeks after Hurricane María passed over the island.
The information comes to light just three days after Trump criticized Cruz’s leadership during the crisis using his personal Twitter account.
“I have been invited to be part of an information session with president Trump today during his visit to Puerto Rico. I have accepted the invitation on behalf of San Juan and out of respect to the American people represented by the office of President of the United States”, expressed the municipal executive via a press release.
Cruz said she intends to use the opportunity to reiterate what has been her constant discourse since Hurricane Maria devastated the island on September 20th.
“(…) This is about saving lives, not politics; this is about giving Puerto Rico the respect we deserve; and to recognize the moral imperative to do both things”, she added.
“Channels of communication are open which is always good, but they need to produce the necessary results”, said the mayor of San Juan. “This is a humanitarian crisis and should be attended to with a sense of urgency. It’s the only way we can accomplish the only mission that matters: to save lives”, she concluded.
