Nonprofit Hospital Pediátrico Foundation Urges People to Contribute

SAN JUAN – The Fundación Hospital Pediátrico (Pediatric Hospital Foundation, or FHP by its Spanish initials) created a Fund for Extraordinary Needs to support the Hospital Pediátrico Universitario Dr. Antonio Ortiz of Centro Médico in Río Piedras, in the medical care of children and adolescents in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rebeca Quiñones, executive director of the Pediatric Hospital Foundation indicated that with the financial support, more personal protective equipment will be acquired, such as disposable gloves, masks, face shields and gowns, to protect medical personnel while continuing to provide services to patients and their families.

With the donations, the hospital will also be able to obtain additional medication for pre-existing conditions, such as asthma. Children with moderate or severe asthma and other immune disorders are at increased risk of getting severe COVID-19.

“We are the friendly hand of the Pediatric Hospital to obtain more resources that in this case are destined to the COVID -19 crisis. Together, and with our support, we can play an important role in attending to this emergency and serving our patients, the community, and fulfilling our mission of providing excellent medical care to all children, without exception, today and always,” the foundation’s executive director said.
The donations will also allow covering some of the basic needs of low-income families with basic necessities such as food stamps, diapers, pajamas, wet wipes and medical equipment.

“Likewise, it will attend to the needs of medical personnel who work tirelessly every day to provide exceptional care to children and their families,” the foundation said.

The funds will also help develop and establish a campaign over COVID-19 called #quedateencasa.

“The campaign will educate the public on how to protect themselves and their families, what to do if they get sick, how to limit the spread of COVID-19, and support children’s mental and emotional health during this time of uncertainty,” the foundation explained.
