Former Popular Democratic Party Sen. Modesto Agosto Alicea has died of stomach cancer at his home in Rincón. He was 72 years old.

Agosto Alicea was elected to the Senate in 1996 representing the district of Ponce. He was reelected in 2000, a term in which he presided the Senate Treasury Committee and remained in the Senate until 2009 after losing the 2008 primaries.

Agosto Alicea was a supporter of reducing the island’s independence on fossil fuels. He complained to another media outlet in 2008 when environmental groups objected the construction of windmills in Guayanilla. But he also supported the construction of the Southern Gas pipeline because it was going to help reduce energy costs, which at the time hovered at around $147 per barrel.

He also advocated the idea of granting cities more autonomy and defended the independence of the Legislature.
