Health Department adds 8 deaths to COVID-19 report

SAN JUAN – The Puerto Rico Health Department reported Tuesday eight deaths from COVID-19, as well as 167 additional confirmed cases and 249 probable cases.
Of the reported fatalities, five were listed as confirmed as follows:

  • 83-year-old man from the Metro region
  • 82-year-old man from the Metro region
  • 72-year-old woman from the Mayagüez region
  • 41-year-old man from the Metro region
  • 69-year-old man from the Aguadilla region

The three other deaths, which were registered as probably caused by the disease are of a 57-year-old man from the Arecibo region and two men, both 81 years old, from the Arecibo and Bayamón regions, respectively.

The total number of confirmed deaths to date is 104, while the probable ones add up to 105, for a total of 209.

“The change in the number of deaths should not be interpreted as having occurred in the last 24 hours. Similarly, it is important to note that the reporting of deaths can vary, to the extent that the processes of registration and codification of the causes of death occur, which could take several days,” reads a department statement.
As for cases of COVID-19 confirmed via PCR, or diagnostic, testing, the total to date is 5,585, made up of 2,815 women and 2,770 men.

As part of the report, 249 additional probable cases were registered, “with a sample collection date of July 16 to 25, 2020,” the department said, adding that the total to date is 10,255, “after being adjusted, by subtracting nine cases that had a positive molecular [diagnostic] test was subsequently added to the cases recorded as part of this report. Probable cases are divided into 5,610 women and 4,644 men; one case remains under investigation in the category of ​​sex.

“The adjustments to totals are made as part of an effort by the Department of Health, entities and clinical laboratories, to ensure that all samples taken for COVID-19 are registered in the Bio Portal, regardless of the date they were taken.”
