Close to 690 new cases added

SAN JUAN – The Department of Health reported eight deaths from COVID-19, and 452 additional confirmed and 234 probable cases, for a total of at least 686 newly recorded cases in Puerto Rico.

Of the reported deaths, seven were confirmed as having been due to the disease and listed as follows:

  • 59-year-old woman from the Caguas region
  • 84-year-old woman from the Arecibo region
  • 84-year-old woman from the Metro region
  • 64-year-old man from the Metro region
  • 60-year-old man from the Arecibo region
  • 65-year-old man from the Bayamón region
  • 55-year-old woman from the Bayamón region

In addition, a 95-year-old woman from the Bayamón region was also recorded by a health professional as having passed away from symtpoms of a coronavirus infection, but listed as probable for not having been confirmed by a diagnostic test.

The number of confirmed deaths now totals 270, while 142 are registered as probable; therefore, the total number of deaths is 412.

“The change in the number of deaths should not be interpreted as having occurred in the last 24 hours. Likewise, it is important to point out that the deaths report may vary to the extent that the processes of registration and coding of the causes of death occur, which could take several days,” the department reminds in its daily media release.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to date is 14,469, of which 7,610 are women and 6,859 are men.

“The total was adjusted after subtracting one duplicate case and adding eight cases with sampling dates from April 29 to August 6. The reported cases are those that have a positive PCR test, with a sample collection date of August 14 to 24.

“As part of the report, 234 additional probable cases were registered, with a sampling date that includes August 14-24. In this line, the total is 16,914, after being adjusted, by subtracting 63 cases that later had a positive molecular test and were added to the cases registered as part of this report. On the other hand, a duplicate case was subtracted and ten cases were added with sampling dates from June 21 to August 11. Probable cases are divided into 9,326 women and 7,588 men,” the Health Department wrote.
