House to Vote on Traffic Fine Payment Incentives
SAN JUAN – The House of Representatives will vote during Monday’s session for House Bill 2748 that would create an incentive for people to pay their traffic fines under the “Vehicle and Traffic Law of Puerto Rico.”
The announcement was made by Rep. Ramón Luis Cruz Burgos, chairman of the House Transportation, Infrastructure, and Recreation and Sports Committee.
“With the approval of this bill, we change the rules of the game. Puerto Ricans have accumulated $700 million in traffic fines. The government needs to be proactive with this situation because the last two traffic fine amnesties only yielded $48 million,” Cruz Burgos said in a press release.
The bill seeks to prevent the accumulation of traffic fines and reduce the number of people driving with expired licenses because they cannot pay their traffic tickets.
The proposed amnesty would also create a notification system for drivers that would suggest a deferred payment plan.
