Puerto Rico Gov Confirms Health Secretary’s Resignation is Effective Immediately
SAN JUAN – The interim secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Health, Concepción Quiñones de Longo, has resigned.
“I received the resignation letter from Dr. Concepción Quiñones de Longo, as interim secretary of @DeptSaludPR. It was immediately accepted. My priority right now is to attend to this pandemic and that our people are safe,” Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced tweeted Thursday
The reasons for her resignation are still unknown. The governor has not yet said who would replace Quiñones.
Quiñones began heading the Health Department when former Secretary Rafael Rodríguez Mercado was asked to resign by Vázquez on March 14, the same day she announced her order to close all nonessential buildings and implementing a curfew amid the crisis caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Days later, Vázquez appointed a task force of public health workers of various specialties who have been advising her on the measures needed to face the coronavirus outbreak.
