James Beard nominates Puerto Rico’s José Enrique in Best Chef category
SAN JUAN – The James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday the nominees for its 2018 awards. The coveted prizes recognize culinary professionals for “excellence and achievement” in nearly 60 categories, including Restaurant and Chef, Restaurant Design, Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America, and Media.
Puerto Rico chef José Enrique was named among the Best Chef nominees for the South region, which includes Alabama, Arizona, Puerto Rico, Florida, Louisiana and Missouri.
Chef José Andrés, who was named Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, began his food relief operation after Hurricane Maria out of José Enrique’s restaurant, José Enrique, in Santurce, Puerto Rico.
Awards for the Restaurant and Chef and Restaurant Design categories will be handed out at the James Beard Awards Gala at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on May 7. During the public event, the special achievement awards Humanitarian of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Design Icon, Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America, and America’s Classics will also be conferred.
Winners of the 2018 James Beard Media Awards will be announced at an event “honoring the nation’s top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food journalists” at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City on April 27.
Tickets to the May 7 Awards Gala and the April 27 Media Awards dinner will go on sale March 21. They will be available at jamesbeard.org/awards/tickets. General public tickets are $500.
Award winners receive a certificate and a medallion engraved with the James Beard Foundation Awards insignia.
