LUMA Reports That Some 37,000 Customers Remain Without Power
After a fire at LUMA Energy’s Monacillos Substation in San Juan left practically all of Puerto Rico without power, LUMA Energy President Wayne Stensby said early Friday that the company and its energy partners should restore the service to all residents by 6 p.m.
However, the official couldn’t answer several questions related to the cause of the blackout that occurred several days after the company officially took over the transmission and distribution system of Puerto Rico’s power grid on June 1.
“Our priority is to restore customers and get the system back into service,” Stensby said at a news conference at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in Miramar. “Detailed investigations are quite complex, and we would work through that methodically.”
Stensby said this morning that 37,000 customers were still without electricity but that the service should be normalized after the company connects a mobile substation at the Monacillos Substation. The connection should help to offset the power loss after a fire engulfed a transformer.
“We have not been able to locate the source of the fault,” said Stensby, while adding that the company is working alongside authorities in an investigation of the incident.
LUMA estimates that 900,000 customers across the island were left without electricity when a fire of great magnitude was reported at the Monacillos Substation. The company believes a safety mechanism shut off the service to protect the power grid.
