SAN JUAN – Puerto Rican tennis player Mónica Puig (37th in the world) was victorious in her Rio Olympics debut, comfortably beating Polona Hercog of Slovenia (98th WTA) 6-3, 6-2.

The game, which was delayed a couple of hours due to high winds, began with uncertainty for the Puerto Rican, who lost her first serve and ended up 0-2 in the first set, but she pulled herself together in time to overcome the European without problems.

Now Puig goes against Russian Anastasia Pavlychenkova, 19th in the circuit and seeded 14th in the Olympic tournament.
