By on May 16, 2016

SAN JUAN – As the general primary nears, about 40 New Progressive Party (NPP) lawmakers and candidates for legislative seats in the House of Representatives have thrown their support behind Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi’s candidacy for governor.

The group, led by Reps. Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló, José Aponte Hernández, Jorge Navarro, Tony Soto and Waldemar Quiles, said Monday that Pierluisi is the only candidate who can ensure the party’s victory in the general election Nov. 8.

They emphasized that for Pierluisi to be the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the general elections, people must go vote in the June 5 primary.

“The November election is the most important in the history of our island. No elected governor has been handed a government like the one whoever is elected will get in the next elections. Therefore, Puerto Ricans cannot risk choosing a person without the ability, experience and maturity to guide the destiny of our people,” Rodríguez Aguiló said.

Soto, who represents the municipalities of Guaynabo, Cataño and Bayamón, praised Pierluisi’s ability to achieve goals for Puerto Rico.

Former House Speaker José Aponte Hernández emphasized the importance of voting for a candidate with a record of service in favor of statehood.

“Without a doubt, Pedro Pierluisi is the leader who has obtained the most achievements on the status issue. Not only did the plebiscite in which statehood won in 2012 arise from his congressional bill but I know firsthand he defended it along with [former Gov. Luis] Fortuño when there were people, who now claim to be NPP candidates, opposed it,” Aponte Hernández said during a press conference Monday at Pierluisi’s campaign headquarters.

Navarro and Quiles both said another administration like Gov. Alejandro García Padilla’s would be disastrous for Puerto Rico.
