SAN JUAN – On the New Progressive Party (NPP) front, while the primary battle between Ricardo Rosselló and Pedro Pierluisi is poised to be an extremely close affair, the story seems altogether different when it comes to the resident commissioner spot in the NPP ticket, with House minority leader Jenniffer González enjoying a commanding lead over former gubernatorial candidate Carlos Pesquera.

With 34% of polling units reported islandwide, González received 118,737 votes, or 70.6%, versus Pesquera’s 49,432 votes, or just 29.4%, according to numbers by the State Elections Commission at 6 p.m. Sunday.

During the campaign, analysts had favored the charismatic González against the more cerebral Pesquera, despite the latter’s allegations that González is not sufficiently skilled in the English language to be able to work effectively as Puerto Rico’s non-voting representative in the U.S. Congress.
