Perelló to Bernier: I Will Not Resign

By on August 26, 2016

SAN JUAN — House Speaker Jaime Perelló said Friday morning he will not resign from his position, even though Popular Democratic Party (PDP) President David Bernier called for Perelló’s resignation Thursday night in light of the public pressure that the federal case against PDP fundraiser Anaudi Hernández has generated.

Perelló said he “felt disappointed” with Bernier’s request for his resignation, and assured he never contemplated resigning from his position as House speaker.

“I was surprised to hear about the statements from our party president, more so after we have kept an open, and for my part sincere, channel of communication these last few days about this issue. I cannot hide my disappointment about his statements, and I believe they were brought about by pressures and the web of disinformation, intrigue, demagoguery and attempts to taint reputations by third parties within and outside my party,” he said.

Perelló explained via a written statement that resigning from the House speaker chair “would send the wrong message,” and that he never considered doing so.

“[Bernier’s] request for my resignation has never been an option I have contemplated. To do so would send the wrongful message that rumors, intrigue and political attacks give results, and are enough to remove a public official who was duly elected and revalidated just mere weeks ago [in the party primaries]. I repeat that my conscience is clear. Due to that, I can continue to hold my head high, because I have not committed nor have I ordered any illegal, much less immoral, act to take place against the [Puerto Rican] people who I swore to defend since the first day. I reaffirm that I have never failed my country,” the legislative leader stressed.

“My political mentor and friend taught me that when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” he added.
