Pierluisi Receives Endorsements from Members of US Congress
SAN JUAN – New Progressive Party (PNP) gubernatorial hopeful Pedro Pierluisi has been endorsed by U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, as well as by Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
Pelosi said that thanks to Pierluisi’s leadership, great strides have been made to improve the treatment of Puerto Rico under federal healthcare initiatives, to increase federal resources to reduce violence related to drugs, and in addressing the fiscal and economic crisis in Puerto Rico, “which is causing so much suffering.”
She added that the resident commissioner has the knowledge and experience needed to lead Puerto Rico forward. “That’s why I’m proud to endorse Pedro Pierluisi to be become the next governor of Puerto Rico.”
Congressman Hoyer highlighted Pierluisi’s work in benefit of Puerto Ricans, saying he has been a powerful voice for the island in the U.S. Congress and has worked tirelessly to address the debt crisis, fight the Zika virus outbreak, and create jobs and opportunities. “I am proud to endorse him for governor,” he said.
Wasserman Schultz said she had the honor to work closely with the resident commissioner for the past eight years. Adding that although a proud Democrat, Pierluisi is respected by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle for his knowledge, his work ethic and passion.
In a release, Pierluisi thanked the endorsements, saying,
“Having the support of these three important leaders is very important to me because it validates the work I have done for eight years in Congress. More importantly, they are three leaders who will play decisive roles in the next four years, in which the future of Puerto Rico will be at stake, particularly when I demand statehood from Washington after we hold the first [statehood] admission referendum.”
