By on May 30, 2017

SAN JUAN – San Juan-based coworking space Piloto 151 has launched a new speaker series, titled “Dear Fiscal Board,” with the goal of raising the discussion of the role technology and digital governance could play in helping Puerto Rico rebuild as an innovation-driven economy and emerge from its fiscal crisis.

The series is hosting internationally renowned “GovTech” speakers to talk about their experience in digital governance with the hopes of learning from them and advancing technology policies that make sense for Puerto Rico, according to the announcing release.

“Transforming our government to native digital form could translate into saving billions of dollars in government spending, improving the lives of citizens and generating increased innovation and economic opportunity for all,” Giancarlo González, spokesman for the speaker series, said.

The first invited speaker is the former deputy director of the United Kingdom’s Digital Service, which is highly regarded as “the gold standard for e-governments.” On Tuesday, May 30, at 6 p.m., Tom Loosemore will be speaking in Piloto 151’s location in Old San Juan about how the UK was able to save billions of dollars in government spending while improving services through the “government as a platform” initiative.

The series will also host Shawn Sullivan, Airbnb’s public policy director for Central America and the Caribbean, who will be discuss how Puerto Rico can leverage the sharing economy to emerge from its fiscal crisis.

Sofia Stolberg, Piloto 151’s CEO, explained that the series will not only highlight how other governments have used technology to be more “agile, responsive and resilient,” but will also invite guest speakers who can talk about “opportunities to unlock innovation and economic growth.”

“If we want to talk about unleashing an unprecedented wave of innovation and economic opportunity in Puerto Rico, then we need to start talking about the technology policies that will help us get there,” Stolberg added.
