PIP Calls UN-Approved Proposal on Decolonization Unprecedented

By on June 21, 2016

SAN JUAN – “A development without precedence” is how the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) cataloged the United Nations decolonization committee‘s approval of gubernatorial candidate María de Lourdes Santiago’s proposal, which calls for the committee to serve as intermediary between the U.S. government and those in Puerto Rico who demand compliance with UN General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 1960.

“This is a development without precedent, that before the Decolonization Committee’s approval of the resolution, the Cuban ambassador made the proposal presented by María de Lourdes Santiago his so the Decolonization Committee president serve as an important intermediary in the efforts to establish dialogue between the U.S. government and those of us in Puerto Rico who are calling for decolonization and independence,” said Juan Dalmau, PIP candidate for senator at-large.

Dalmau also pointed out that “the proposal of the Cuban ambassador – for the PIP’s petition to be accepted – was approved without opposition by members of the committee, which serves as a step to take the colonial issue of Puerto Rico to the United Nations’ General Assembly, but what is more important, to establish dialogue with the circles of powers in the U.S. so they assume their responsibility with respect to the decolonization of Puerto Rico,” he said.

He added that the adopted proposal aims to leave behind old confrontational rhetoric, which was framed by the Cold War.

“Today, when the three branches of the U.S. government have admitted Puerto Rico is a colony, the independence movement launches a proposal for dialogue that propels our decolonization and independence,” he said.
