Proposals for Ceiba-Vieques Route to be Requested
SAN JUAN – A request for proposals (RFP) for companies interested in offering the so-called “short-route” ferry service from Ceiba to Vieques will be published in the coming weeks, Popular Democratic Party Sen. Luis Daniel Rivera said Friday.
The offering would complement transportation services provided by the Maritime Transportation Authority (MTA). Currently, the maritime route from Vieques and Fajardo takes up to an hour and a half to cover. By contrast, the Ceiba to Vieques route is about 30-minutes long.
According to the legislator, the idea of establishing ferry service from Ceiba to Vieques remains a priority in his legislative agenda. He met with Transportation Secretary Miguel Torres, MTA Director José Ruiz and Eduardo Vergara, La Fortaleza assistant chief of staff, to discuss the route.
“Citizen participation is crucial in these processes, and we must make sure that every decision made in relation to the services provided to residents of the two small islands (Vieques and Culebra) takes them into consideration,” he said.
He asked those interested in providing ferry service to go to a town meeting scheduled for Feb. 16 in Culebra and Feb. 18 in Vieques.
