Puerto Rico businesses receive 9 USDA grants

Rural Energy for America Program investing $9.3 million

SAN JUAN – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is awarding additional grants for projects in all states and Puerto Rico to reduce energy costs for farmers, agricultural producers and rural-based businesses and institutions.

The agency is investing $9.3 million through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Congress appropriated $50 million for REAP grants and loan guarantees in fiscal year 2019.

“Lowering energy costs helps businesses improve their bottom line and create jobs,” Rural Business-Cooperative Service Administrator Bette Brand said in the announcing release Wednesday. 

USDA Rural Development State Director for Puerto Rico Josué E. Rivera provided the following list of beneficiaries:

  • Centro Oftalmológico del Este is receiving a $14,662 grant to purchase and install a 25.84 kilowatt (kW) solar power system. This project will save $7,949.70 a year, enough electricity to power three homes.
  • F&F is receiving $19,861 to purchase and install a 25 kW solar system. This project will save $7,988 per year.
  • Farmacia Hayuya is receiving a grant of $7,065 to purchase and install an 8.1 kW solar system and battery storage. This project will save $2,274 per year.
  • Alejandro González (Colmado Los Teenagers) is receiving a grant of $8,750 to purchase and install a solar system that will save $3,493 a year.
  • Panadería y Repostería La Estancia is receiving a grant of $20,000 to purchase a solar system that will save $17,650.36 a year.

 These were previously approved:

  • In Arecibo, Javier Segarra Oyola Inc. will use an $18,138 grant to purchase and install a 30.69 kW photovoltaic (PV) system. This project will save $11,879 per year and replace 49,497 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a year (96%), enough electricity to power four homes.
  • Agropek LLC in Peñuelas will use a grant of $4,558 to purchase and install a 5.6 kW photovoltaic solar system. This project will save $1,743 a year.
  • Hacienda Agrícola de Comerío Inc. is receiving an $11,061 grant to purchase and install a 27 kW PV system. This project will save $6,699 a year and produce 70% of its required electricity.
  • Cover y Más Cover Inc. in Arecibo is receiving a $19,875 grant to purchase and install a 31.6 kW Solar System. This project will save 54% of its yearly energy cost.
