Puerto Rico gov holds impromptu meeting with cabinet members
Schedules meeting with his party’s mayors ahead of ‘National Strike’
SAN JUAN — A day before a massive demonstration that is being called a “National Strike” to demand the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló is scheduled to take place, the heads of many government agencies arrived in the governor’s La Fortaleza mansion, but the only reported reason given for the Sunday meeting was that it had been previously scheduled.
The officials who walked through the La Fortaleza gates included Economic Development Secretary Manuel Laboy, the executive director of the Infrastructure Financing Authority, Eduardo Rivera Cruz; and the new director of the Office of Management and Budget, Iris “Chiqui” Santos, who was named Friday and took over one of the five positions previously held by Christian Sobrino.
Besides the meeting, Rosselló also convened a meeting for 6 p.m. with the Mayor’s Federation, which is made up of New Progressive Party (NPP) mayors.
Rosselló continues to face public outcry over the messages leaked between him and his inner circle, which included derogatory language and actions that have been deemed unethical and in some cases illegal, according to a Bar Association report. Amid mounting public condemnation, more members of the NPP, which Rosselló presides, have called for his resignation.
The Sunday meeting was also attended by the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co., Carla Campos, Sports and Recreation Secretary Adriana Sánchez and Public Housing Administrator William Rodríguez.
