Puerto Rico gov’t to hold blockchain seminar for entrepreneurs

SAN JUAN – Blockchain technology and its role in business will be discussed in a seminar that will take place Oct. 16 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, the president of the Economic Development Bank of Puerto Rico (EDB), Luis Burdiel, announced Wednesday.

The event, called “Blockchain and other Disruptive Technologies: The Competitive Advantage for Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation,” is the result of a partnership between the EDB, the Economic Development Department, Dictum Puerto Rico, the Foundation for Financial Innovation and the Digital Economy (Fifed) and tech consulting firm Dictum Futurae.

The EDB offers of up to $1 million in financing to entrepreneurs in the manufacturing, commerce, tourism, agriculture and service sectors, among others.

“It is vitally important that the business community is properly informed about disruptive technologies such as blockchain,” Burdiel said. “This highly versatile technology was originally developed to register financial transactions with the Bitcoin digital currency. However, its design is conducive for use in all types of applications.”

The topics to be discussed during the free seminar include blockchain-related regulations, new technologies and business models, “governance and digital identity,” the “functionality of smart contracts,” and blockchain applications in emergency situations. The event organizers said attendees “will have the opportunity to share their doubts and concerns” with the speakers.

“Blockchain is a technology that–correctly applied–will be essential to strengthen business competitiveness. At the [Economic Development and Commerce] Department, we have been pioneers in creating a Blockchain Advisory Board to assist in the development and implementation of a regulatory framework for this sector. The objective is to maximize the use of this technology in a way that contributes to the recovery of Puerto Rico,” Secretary Manuel Laboy Rivera said.

“Technology is a key factor for entrepreneurship and a determining tool in emergency situations, which is why the Dictum Group, together with its lawyers, economists and engineers, who are experts in the digital economy, will bring the latest advances in business development to the Puerto Rican public, as well as applications in real island cases,” said the CEO and partner of Dictum Abogados and Dictum Futurae and president of Fifed, Vicente José García Gil.

Fifed is a nonprofit that promotes financial culture via studies, workshops and conferences, and fosters cooperation between public and private institutions for the development of policies that accelerate innovation.

Dictum Futurae is an offshoot of Dictum Abogados that helps companies with their digital evolution. It is an active member of Spain-based consortium Alastria, which advocates for the establishment of a semi-public blockchain infrastructure and digital identity system.

“We continue working tirelessly to support the efforts of small and midsize entrepreneurs and to accelerate the economic recovery process of our island,” Burdiel said. “The event that will take place next week represents the ideal opportunity for hundreds of entrepreneurs who seek business opportunities in the area of blockchain technology or who want to incorporate it successfully into their operations.”
