Puerto Rico Justice Dept. makes Court of Appeals decisions available online
SAN JUAN – Following a request from lawyers and legal scholars, Puerto Ricans will now be able to access, free of charge, the latest rulings and final resolutions of the Puerto Rico Court of Appeals through the judicial branch’s website, Chief Justice Maite D. Oronoz Rodríguez announced.
“With this new tool, the public will be able to examine, analyze and download hundreds of final determinations issued since 2015 to the present. The tool allows the search using the case number or the name of the parties,” she said.
“The electronic publication of the decisions of the Court of Appeals is a service to the community in line with our vision of transparency, access and efficiency. This initiative lets the public know the processes in the Court of Appeals and the determinations issued by the judges in disputes presented to them. At the Judicial Branch we will continue doing our part to promote education, which includes that people have effective access to information about what happens in the courts,” Justice Oronoz Rodríguez said.
While the opinions and resolutions of the Supreme Court are published online and are available free of charge, Court of Appeals rulings had to be requested directly from the Clerk of the Court, and incurred a charged by private suppliers.
“Now they are published in our Internet Portal so any person, journalist or member of the legal community can access them without cost and without restrictions,” she said.
The rulings of the Court of Appeals do not set precedent, as do those of the Supreme Court.
