Puerto Rico minority party claims victory with referendum boycott

SAN JUAN – When polls closed, Popular Democratic Party (PDP) Secretary-General Carlos ‘Charlie’ Delgado Altieri said the boycott of the referendum for Puerto Rico’s immediate decolonization prevailed after an allegedly low voter turnout.

“Without a doubt, the people of Puerto Rico responded to the call for boycott. We have been monitoring the different units across the island and what we have gathered is that participation in this process has been significantly low. This is a process in which the people of Puerto Rico didn’t believe in from the beginning,” Delgado Altieri said.

The PDP secretary-general maintained that the vote was a “rigged process, a process to fool the people of Puerto Rico,” and resulted in “a total failure.”

“Unfortunately, today we see the failure of this process, and an excellent opportunity was lost to achieve a consensus where convergence would prevail for each political movement to express itself strongly to make a final definition of the political status viable. This isn’t what we saw today. What we see today is the result of manipulation,” claimed Delgado Altieri, who is also the mayor of Isabela.

Of the 2.2 million registered voters, the PDP had predicted that the New Progressive Party (NPP) wouldn’t move more than 20% of the electorate, which represents roughly 450,000 voters.

In 2012 statehood garnered 800,000 votes.
