Republican Party of Puerto Rico VP Urges Backing of Rubio
SAN JUAN – As vice president of the Republican Party of Puerto Rico, Yauco Mayor Abel Nazario Quiñones on Monday appealed to Puerto Ricans to vote for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla) in the presidential primaries.
“Marco Rubio has been firmly in favor of statehood for Puerto Rico and has favored immigration reform in the United States,” Nazario Quiñones said ahead of the Republican Party’s March 6 primary on the island.
“We are at a historic moment in which the Puerto Rican vote could decide who will be the presidential candidate for the Republican Party, which is why we have to support the candidate who understands and knows the Hispanic community firsthand,” he added.
The GOP island representative reminded that Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants and therefore “understands what immigrants go through in our nation and does not represent special interests,” in an apparent reference to Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, the other contenders for the Republican presidential nomination.
Nazario Quiñones said that following the withdrawal of Jeb Bush from the Republican race, “it is time to unite all efforts behind a candidate in order to defeat Donald Trump. With Jeb Bush withdrawing from the contest, the only true conservative candidate who can unite the Republican party and attract votes…is Marco Rubio.”
The mayor, who is also vice chairman of the New Progressive Party, said “there is much at stake in this primary, if Donald Trump is the candidate, Hillary Clinton could win the general election.”
“Mr. Trump has insulted our community and has not presented serious ideas to address the problem of immigration in the United States; for this and many other reasons, Trump must be defeated. I am convinced Marco Rubio is the only one who can do it,” Nazario Quiñones assured.
