Rosselló Appoints William Villafañe as NPP Secretary-General
SAN JUAN – Ricardo Rosselló, the newly elected New Progressive Party (NPP) gubernatorial candidate, announced Monday that William Villafañe will be replacing José Aponte Hernández as the party’s new secretary-general.
After winning yesterday’s primary against Pedro Pierluisi, Rosselló made the announcement at a press conference, saying that Villafañe, who is president of the NPP Youth, attorney, expert in government affairs and a “pillar of the campaign,” as the son of former Gov. Pedro Rosselló called him.
“This designation is a great honor. I thank God and then him [Ricardo Rosselló]. We are committed to unify the party and have our candidate win the election. Our approach is of constructive criticism with real alternatives in hand,” he said.
The gubernatorial candidate said he would convene a meeting of directors Monday and announced a transition committee comprising, among others, Willie Sánchez and Norma Burgos.
“We want to make multiple changes, and we will make them little by little. We want to design an NPP structure based on unity of purpose, “he said.
An ethics committee will be created, Rosselló added, saying that within its requirements should be a commitment against corruption by the NPP candidates.
He also announced a Continuous Improvement Committee, “an entity to establish appraisal methods and improve areas of the campaign.”
Rosselló anticipated travelling to New York soon with the party’s candidate for resident commissioner in Washington, D.C., Jenniffer González, to continue seeking support from stateside politicians for the island’s recovery.
