Rosselló Insists on Use of His Debt Negotiation Plan
SAN JUAN – New Progressive Party (NPP) gubernatorial candidate Ricardo Rosselló is calling on the commonwealth government to adopt his plan to manage the island’s public debt.
“Creditors are willing to engage in a voluntary negotiation process, but if the political leadership of Puerto Rico keeps pushing bankruptcy and the moratorium, this will only reap more failures,” Rosselló said Thursday.
“We still have time to conduct negotiations, subject to fiscal and government reform that yield benefits for the people and restore our credibility,” he added.
The candidate also said that the plan–besides being a short-, medium- and long-term alternative–is a viable plan for Washington and is not burdensome for Puerto Rico, emphasizing it would establish mechanisms for voluntary negotiations without resorting to bankruptcy or a unilaterally decided moratorium.
The measure would have greater acceptance than the alternatives that have been presented so far in the U.S. Congress, he assured.
