Offering early stage funding for ‘high-impact’ technology ideas

SAN JUAN – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced Thursday it will launch a 16-stop tour to offer entrepreneurs working on advanced technology early stage funding as part of the agency’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Its stop in Puerto Rico is scheduled for Nov. 15.

The programs focus on next-generation research & development (R&D) and is led by the SBA with 11 federal agencies. They provide more than $3 billion in early stage funding to small technology firms, innovators, scientists and researchers each year in areas such as unmanned systems, advanced materials, healthcare, cybersecurity and defense.

“Every year, we meet entrepreneurs from around the country looking to turn their big idea into another great American innovation story. We are committed to supporting America’s small businesses owners wherever they are,” SBA Administrator Linda McMahon said in the announcing release.

Each tour stop will be hosted by a local organization involved in supporting entrepreneurs in next generation R&D. Program managers from the participating federal agencies will conduct one-on-one meetings with attendees, take part in targeted panels, discuss technology areas, and share insights into how the agencies make funding decisions, the SBA explained.

“At SBA we are dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs at every stage of small business development,” added Yvette Collazo, the SBA Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands district director. “By bringing the SBIR tour to Puerto Rico we are reiterating our commitment to the island’s innovators, so that they are aware of the available resources that can help them take their ideas to fruition.”

The SBIR/STTR programs “execute over 4,000 new awards annually, which allow innovators to advance new technologies and have contributed to the creation of thousands of jobs,” the SBA’s announcement reads.
