By on May 19, 2016

SAN JUAN–The Secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), Carmen Guerrero, has tended her resignation, Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro García Padilla announced Thursday.

Guerrero will remain in her position until June 15, when Assistant Secretary Julio Méndez will take over as interim secretary.

The DNER secretary resigned from her post after she was appointed to head the Caribbean Environmental Protection Division, which is part of the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Through a statement, García Padilla thanked Guerrero for her “work and commitment” at the head of DNER. “With her support and effort, this administration was able to increase protected lands from 8% to 16%,” he noted.

Guerrero also worked on initiatives such as a management plan for the island’s karst region, a program called Bosque Modelo, and the passage of a law protecting the Northeastern Ecological Corridor, among other measures.
