By on January 20, 2017

SAN JUAN — The Independent Special Prosecutor Panel (PFEI by its Spanish initials) took in Friday former Justice Secretary César Miranda’s recommendation to assign a special prosecutor to conduct an investigation into illegal acts attributed to former House Speaker Jaime Perelló.

Miranda’s report mentions the following crimes: illicit enrichment, unlawful use of labor or public services, undue intentions in government operations, embezzlement, and infringement of Article 13.003 of the Campaign Financing Act, among others.

After evaluating the report, the panel understood that findings in the preliminary investigation merit a thorough investigation regarding the acts attributed to the former House leader.

Meanwhile, a panel resolution states there is sufficient cause to believe that Anaudi Hernández Pérez, Héctor Vargas Soto, Víctor Burgos Cotto, Xavier E. González Calderón and Glenn O. Rivera Pizarro could have committed some of the aforementioned crimes alongside Perelló.

Likewise, the report maintains that Ivelisse T. Reyes González, Perelló’s campaign treasurer, may have committed a crime for allegedly violating Article 14.005 of the Campaign Financing Act.

The panel also determined to consolidate this case with the investigation of former Popular Democratic Party Sen. María Teresa “Mari Tere” González. Thus, it added special prosecutors Emilio E. Arill and Leticia Pabón who, along with the prosecutors previously assigned to the former senator’s case (Ramón Mendoza and Manuel Núñez), will conduct the corresponding investigation into both cases.

The panel resolution establishes that the designated prosecutors must present the final report of their investigation within 90 days.
