The Big Differences Between Nixon and Trump

As the country and the world witnessed on TV the devastating first public hearing of the January 6th Committee beginning to lay out the overwhelming evidence that Donald Trump is the fi rst American president in 235 years to engage in criminal sedition to overturn a democratic election, the question is: Is this fi nally the end of Trump?

Journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, of Watergate fame, and others see a similarity between Richard Nixon and Donald Trump: Both lied to the American people and engaged in serious criminal actions to undermine American democracy. If the country finally got over Nixon and Watergate, why not Trump?

The answer is that there is a big difference. When Republican leaders led by Sen. Barry Goldwater informed Nixon in the White House on August 7, 1974, that his Republican Party was poised to vote in favor of impeaching him, they believed that once Nixon was out of the White House, the country would move on from the Watergate scandal and the GOP would overcome the crisis.
