The Mothers of Invention

It seems like only yesterday that this newspaper moderated a panel discussion on the state of Puerto Rico’s economy featuring two respected economists—Rollins College department director Tonya Warnecke and renowned Puerto Rico expert Heidi Calero—discussing the island’s economy in 2018 A.M. (After Maria). How ironic that it would take two women to explain the mess created mostly by men with a false sense of optimism bolstered by fleeting shots in the arm with doses of federal reconstruction aid.

Although Warnecke does not hail from our Mambo Tropics, she coincided with Calero’s brutal honesty—common sense really— when in no uncertain terms she stressed how one-shot fed funds are hardly lasting pillars for economic development.
