npp-conventionFAJARDO, Puerto Rico – Thousands of New Progressive Party (NPP) followers flooded the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, where the party has been holding since Friday its platform convention ahead of the Nov. 8 general elections.

Headed by its president and gubernatorial candidate, Ricardo Rosselló, thousands had arrived by early Sunday to participate in the party convention’s final events to approve its government program, which includes significant structural changes, particularly to the Health and Education departments.

The NPP platform also emphasizes a wide-ranging anti-corruption program and an action plan to promote a Puerto Rico statehood admission process both congressionally and through influential nongovernmental organizations in Washington, D.C.

The party’s candidate for resident commissioner, Jenniffer González, and Rosselló have promoted since January an aggressive plan to present a bill for Puerto Rico to become a U.S. state.

At about 10 a.m. the mayoral candidates arrived, as well as the incumbent mayors with their respective contingent of followers, most of which belonged to San Juan delegations, headed by San Juan mayoral candidate Leo Díaz Urbina, Fajardo’s Aníbal Meléndez and Carlos “Johnny” Méndez, who is seeking a House seat as well to become speaker, were he to be elected and gain control of the lower chamber.

Early in the morning, party electoral Commissioner Aníbal Vega Borges and alternate Commissioner Norma Burgos gave a seminar to hundreds of electoral officials in which they stressed the urgency of arriving early to the polling centers.
