By on March 29, 2016

SAN JUAN – The president of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Urayoán R. Walker Ramos, and the deans of the 11 campuses of the university system have issued a declaration in rejection of “any attempt” against the UPR’s autonomy or additional budget cuts in light of the U.S. House of Representatives’ proposed Financial Oversight & Management Board for Puerto Rico.

UPRThe declaration states education is one of the pillars of democracy and that a fiscal control board would subvert freedom and lessen the authority and power of the island’s principal educational center.

“University autonomy and providing a quality education within the reach of Puerto Ricans are fundamental pillars of the University of Puerto Rico. Thus, we strongly reject any interference in university autonomy or greater budget cuts,” the declaration reads, while highlighting the importance of the UPR amid the fiscal situation Puerto Rico is going through as an solution to the struggle against inequality.

“The University of Puerto Rico is our main research, higher education, and social and cultural service center. Therefore, it is our greatest social achievement and the best resource to sustainably combat poverty and dependence. The University of Puerto Rico is essential in addressing the Puerto Rican crisis, and as such it should receive the financial resources that allow it to admit more Puerto Ricans, widen its academic offering and promote more research,” the statement adds.

In conclusion, the UPR’s president and its deans appealed to the university community and the public to defend “the best legacy we can leave future generations.”
