UPR’s Governing Board Ousts President, Río Piedras Campus Officials
SAN JUAN – The University of Puerto Rico’s Governing Board removed President Uroyoán Walker from his post Thursday afternoon after withdrawing their confidence due to his alleged role in the granting of presidential scholarships last year.
The Governing Board appointed Prof. Celeste Freytes as interim president of Puerto Rico’s only state run university.
Walker was ousted after eight board members voted in favor of the recommendation made by the subcommittee in charge of the investigation of the presidential scholarships scandal. Two board members, Education Secretary Rafael Román and Ana María García Blanco abstained.
The board also voted in favor of removing Río Piedras Campus Chancellor Carlos Severino and Dean Carlos Rodríguez Fraticelli from their posts.
